UGC Distance Education Bureau Approved Distance Education Courses Universities in India

Latest education news on 4th April 2018 was regarding UGC making Kerala Distance education courses invalid. Distance Education Bureau (DEB) under University Grants Commission (UGC) has decided to increase minimum standards required for an University to conduct courses. Correspondence and Distance education courses validity from academic year 2018-2019 in various Distance Universities located allover India will be affected based on UGC (Open and Distance Learning) Second Amendment Regulations, 2018.

As per latest news only 60 Universities in India has got UGC approval to conduct Distance education courses in India based on NAAC rating. From now on only Universities in India which have at least A plus grade in NAAC rating will be eligible to conduct these courses. NAAC rating is made by National Assessment and Accreditation Council which determines quality of education provided by universities.

This new amendment of law by UGC Distance Education Bureau (DEB) has made parents and students concerned about which Distance education Universities are approved by UGC’s DEB wing. Many universities in Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Delhi, Haryana, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Telangana, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal have lost their approval to conduct Distance learning courses.

This makes it important to know about Distance education courses validity from each University before you plan to join these courses. Only 60 Distance learning universities have been approved to conduct Distance Graduation and Post graduation programs in India. Knowing about Distance education courses validity is extremely important as admissions for these courses will start soon with academic year classes starting from July 2018. Most chosen Distance education courses were provided by Annamalai university which has also lost it’s accreditation validity in UGC’s new ranking. From 2018 academic year Annamalai university will not be able to conduct distance courses.

It’s Kerala state which is most affected by UGC Distance Education Bureau’s decision to allow only Universities with at least A+ grade to be eligible to conduct courses.

Kerala

University of Kerala, University of Calicut, Kannur University were the 3 Universities that were approved by UGC ranking till academic year 2017. Based on present notification by Distance Education Bureau these universities will not be able to conduct distance learning courses in Kerala. Government of Kerala had planned to start an Open University few months back which has not been completed yet. Even if Kerala Open University is started it will not be easy to get UGC requirement of A+ grade rating from National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC).

  • University of Calicut – Not Valid as per UGC
  • Kannur University – Not Valid as per UGC

A plus grade of National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) will be given for Universities which have 3.26 points and more.

  • Kerala University has 3.03 points
  • CUSAT has 3.03 points
  • Calicut University has 3.19 points
  • Mahatma Gandhi University has 3.24 points
  • Kannur University – Not Valid as per UGC
  • Kalady Sanskrit university has 3.03 points

Around 1.72 lakh students were studying in Kerala distance education courses in past year. As Kerala universities have lost their accreditation around 1 lakh people will have to depend on Distance education universities in nearby states like Karnataka, Tamilnadu.
